Currently, there is no known cure for IBS, but there are certain things that can help. Hypnotherapy has been shown to empower the client to manage symptoms of IBS and cultivate a positive mindset. I work with you to develop your own ‘IBS’ toolkit so that you can manage IBS and have a better quality of life. Tension, stress, and anxiety created by living with conditions such as IBS can exacerbate the condition, undermining your immune system and further compromising your health.

A recent ‘Clinical Review’ of hypnosis and relaxation therapies published in the BMJ looked at the existing research on hypnosis and concluded: ‘Randomised trials have shown hypnosis to be of value in treating […] irritable bowel syndrome.’ (Vickers & Zollman, ‘Hypnosis and relaxation therapies,’ BMJ 1999;319: 1346-1349).

Therefore working together to create a ‘toolkit’ to help relax, manage stress and promote a more positive mindset can help alleviate suffering.

A typical session is a combination of talking therapy and hypnosis. During hypnosis, suggestions bypass the critical mind allowing you to subconsciously improve the gut-brain connection.

Solution-focused therapy is now recognised as one of the most successful interventions in treating IBS in conjunction with other interventions based on guidance from your consultant. I am also trained in Gut Directed Hypnotherapy, an evidence-based clinical protocol suggested by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a suitable intervention for IBS.

Hypnotherapy is a supplementary therapy. I help clients who have been formally diagnosed with IBS. It is regarded as a medical condition, so it’s important to consult your doctor for a diagnosis before embarking on a course of Hypnotherapy. I would then, if necessary, support you as part of your team: GP, consultant, dietician. Available for UK clients only.
