Currently, there is no known cure for IBS, but there are certain things that can help. Hypnotherapy has been shown to help alleviate and empower the client to manage symptoms of IBS. I work with you to develop your own ‘IBS’ toolkit so that you can manage IBS and have a better quality of life. Tension, stress and anxiety that can be created by living with conditions such as IBS can exacerbate the condition, and this can undermine your immune system and further compromise your health.

A recent ‘Clinical Review’ of hypnosis and relaxation therapies published in the BMJ looked at the existing research on hypnosis and concluded: ‘Randomised trials have shown hypnosis to be of value in treating […] irritable bowel syndrome.’ (Vickers & Zollman, ‘Hypnosis and relaxation therapies,’ BMJ 1999;319: 1346-1349).

“My anxiety levels rose dramatically after starting a new job. At first, the worries centered on work, but became wider and wider until pretty much anything unknown was beginning to worry me. I was suffering from panic attacks and stress-related IBS, and basically became agoraphobic. A friend suggested I try hypnotherapy. It is hard to express how much it has helped. My life has been transformed, and I am now returning to the confident, outgoing person I was before my anxiety issues. The support I received will go on and on after the sessions, as Annette has equipped me with the tools to remain positive, confident and calm whatever life throws at me. My self-esteem had been at rock-bottom and Annette helped me to build it back up. Essentially, the sessions have helped me become myself again. Thank you, Annette!”

Therefore creating your own toolkit to help relax, manage stress and promote a more positive mindset can help alleviate suffering. A typical session is a combination of talking therapy and hypnosis. During hypnosis, suggestions bypass the critical mind allowing you to subconsciously ‘rewire’ the gut-brain connection.

Solution-focused therapy is now recognised as one of the most successful interventions in the treatment of IBS, if necessary in conjunction with medication. I am also trained in Gut Directed Hypnotherapy, which is an evidence-based, clinical protocol suggested by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a suitable intervention for IBS.

Hypnotherapy is a supplementary therapy.  I help clients who have been formally diagnosed with IBS. It is regarded as a medical condition, so it’s important to consult your doctor for a diagnosis, and it is then recommended that you seek their advice before embarking on a course of Hypnotherapy. I would then, if necessary, support you as part of your team: doctor, consultant, dietician.
